Arkalyk

 

a city (until 1965, a settlement) and center of Arkalyk Raion, Kustanai Oblast, Kazakh SSR. Situated in the extreme southeastern part of the oblast, it is the terminal railroad station of a branch on the Tobol-Tselinograd line. It has a population of 20,000 (1968). The settlement arose in 1956 in connection with the exploitation of bauxite deposits (the Turgai Bauxite Mine), which provide the raw materials for the Pavlodarsk Aluminum Plant.
