double-blind trial double-blind trial A test of the real effect of a new medical treatment, in which neither the patient nor the persons conducting the trial know which of two identical-seeming treatments is genuine and which is not. Trials not conducted in this way cannot be relied on to provide reliable evidence of the efficacy of a treatment because of the power of the placebo effect and of psychological suggestion. |
