Established: Proclaimed a national monument on April 26, 1938; redesignated a national park on March 5, 1980. Designated a Biosphere Reserve in 1976. Location:Park consists of five islands off Southern California: Anacapa, San Miguel, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, and Santa Rosa. Access to islands is by private boat or concessionaire boat; air service is available to Santa Rosa. Mainland visitor centers are located in Ventura (70 miles north of Los Angeles) and Santa Barbara (100 miles north of LosAngeles). Facilities:Campgrounds, picnic area, rest rooms (é), visitor center (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail. Activities:Camping, hiking, swimming, boating, kayaking, scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing, surfing, whale watching, bird-watching, boat tours, interpretive programs. Special Features:The Channel Islands are home to more than 2,000 terrestrial plants andanimals, of which 145 are found nowhere else in the world. Anacapa, Santa Barbara, and Santa Rosa islands are owned and administered by the National Park Service; San Miguel is owned by the U.S. Navy and administered by the National Park Service (permit needed for visitation); Santa Cruz is owned primarily by the Nature Conservancy and managed in cooperation with the National Park Service. The ocean, 6 miles out around each island, has been designated as the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary (see separate entry in National Marine Sanctuaries section for further information).
