Demarcation, Line of

 

(1) A military line (zone) that divides the troops of the warring states during a truce until the permanent border is established by peace treaty or other agreement.

(2) A line dividing the territory of a defeated state into occupation zones.

(3) A line (zone) temporarily established on territory that is the subject of dispute by neighboring countries. The demarcation line is determined by special agreement between the warring sides or between the occupying or conflicting powers.

(4) In medicine, the zone of reactive inflammation that forms in living tissue on the border of a mortified sector (gangrene, sequestrum) or alien body.
