Dement’ev, Evstafii Mikhailovich

Born 1850; died 1918. Doctor and public figure, one of the organizers of health statistics in Russia.

Collaborating with F. F. Erisman and A. V. Pogozhev, Dement’ev studied and gave a masterful description of health conditions in factories and industrial plants of the Moscow Province in the decade 1875-85. The material collected by Dement’ev about the hard life of Russian workers and published in the book The Factory, What It Gives to the Population and What It Takes From It (1893) was used by V. I. Lenin in writing his works What the “Friends of the People” Are and How They Fight the Social-Democrats and The Development of Capitalism in Russia.
