Benois, Nikolai Leont’evich

Born July 1 (13), 1813, in St. Petersburg; died there on Dec. 11 (23), 1898. Russian architect.

Benois studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts between 1827 and 1836; beginning in 1857 he was a professor there. From 1890 to 1893 he was chairman of the St. Petersburg Society of Architects. Benois worked in St. Petersburg and its environs. He completed large complexes, such as Peterhof (now Petrodvorets, 1848–59). He masterfully imitated historical styles (houses of ladies-in-waiting, 1858) and delicately introduced his own structures into the whole ensemble or park complex (the Swiss House at Kuskovo, 1870). Benois also built a number of railroad stations (for example, at Peterhof, 1855–57), using new metal structures to reproduce the Gothic framework in metal.
