(shəno͞ot`), city (1990 pop. 9,488), Neosho co., SE Kans., on the Neosho River; inc. 1873 following the consolidation of four contiguous towns. It is a processing and trade center for an agricultural region, with diverse manufactures. A museum there preserves the work of Martin and Osa JohnsonJohnson, Martin Elmer,
1884–1937, American explorer and author, b. Rockford, Ill. He left home at 14 to work his way to Europe on a cattle boat, returning as a stowaway.
