EpauletEpaulet(Russian, epoleta), a shoulder insignia worn primarily by generals, admirals, and other officers in the Russian and foreign armies and navies. Introduced in Russia in 1807 to replace shoulder straps (pogony), epaulets were worn on both shoulders by officers and men of lower rank in the uhlan regiments. Worn only with the full dress uniform after 1856, epaulets consisted of shoulder pads whose outer ends were rounded and on which insignia were placed (after 1827, the insignia were metal stars). The rounded ends of the epaulets worn by field-grade officers were fringed with fine metal braid or thread; those worn by generals were fringed with thick braids of metal thread. epaulet
