double descent double descent or bilineal descent a system of DESCENT in which there are ‘Patriclans’ and ‘Matriclans’ within the same group. They may each be used for different reasons, for example, inheritance of land may be through the male and inheritance of names through the female. A consequence of this is that an individual is a member of both a PATRILINEAL and a MATRILINEAL DESCENT group. |
