directional gyro

[də′rek·shən·əl ′jī·rō] (aerospace engineering) A flight instrument incorporating a gyro that holds its position in azimuth and thus can be used as a directional reference. Also known as direction indicator. (mechanics) A two-degrees-of-freedom gyro with a provision for maintaining its spin axis approximately horizontal.
