Established: 1989.
Location:20 miles east of Naples, Florida.
Special Features:Refuge is situated in the upper segment of the Fakahatchee Strand of the Big Cypress Swamp. In any given month, 5-11 pathers use the refuge area to den, hunt, and travel through.
Habitats: 26,400 acres of cypress and mixed swamp forests, pine forests, hardwood hammock forests, and prairies, marshes, and sloughs. Permanent and seasonal wetlands comprise approximately 70% of the refuge acreage.
Access: Restricted to designated trails in one portion of the refuge.
Wild life: Florida panther, Florida black bear, Big Cypress fox squirrel, American alligator, eastern indigo snake. Also provides habitat for Atlantic loggerhead sea turtle, striped mud turtle, Kemp's ridley sea turtle, wild turkey and white-tailed deer.
