EPHB4

EPHB4

A gene on chromosome 7q22 that encodes a member of the ephrin-B receptor subfamily of receptor tyrosine kinases, which “promiscuously” bind membrane-bound ephrin-B family ligands residing on adjacent cells, leading to contact-dependent bidirectional signalling into neighbouring cells. With its cognate ligand/functional ligand EFNB2, EPHB4 plays a central role in heart morphogenesis and angiogenesis by regulating cell adhesion and cell migration. EPHB4-mediated signalling controls cellular repulsion and segregation form EFNB2-expressing cells. EPHB4 also plays a role in postnatal blood vessel remodelling, morphogenesis and permeability, as occurs in tumour angiogenesis.
