Fournière, Joseph-Eugène

Born May 31, 1857, in Paris; died there Jan. 4, 1914. French socialist.

A jeweler by profession, Fournière was much influenced by J. Guesde in the 1870’s. Fournière played a major role at the Marseille Congress of 1879, at which the Workers’ Party was established. He later joined the Possibilists. Fournière contributed to several socialist newspapers and in 1885 helped found the Revue socialiste. In the late 1880’s he made contributions to the theory of petit bourgeois reformist socialism. From 1898 to 1902 he served as a Millerandist deputy to Parliament. Fournière produced literary works and numerous popularizations on the history of socialism.
