Location:Along the Missouri River in north-central Montana.
Facilities:Visitor contact station, viewing sites, campgrounds, picnic areas, boat launch, trails, auto tour route, historic features, wilderness area (20,000 acres).
Activities:Camping, boating, fishing, bicycling, hiking, horseback riding, hunting, educational programs.
Special Features:Refuge's terrain is reminiscent of paintings by Charlie Russell, the western artist for whom the refuge is named. Site includes 250,000-acre Fort Peck Reservoir.
Habitats: 1,100,000 acres of native prairies, forested coulees, river bottoms, and badlands.
Access: Unlimited.
Wild life: Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, mule deer, white-tailed deer, elk, pronghorn, and prairie dogs. Also raptors, double-crested cormorants, and blue herons.
