Dzhafarov, Dzhafar Gashum Ogly

 

Born Sept. 7 (20), 1914, in Baku. Soviet theater and literary scholar. Doctor of the arts (1962); corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR (1962). Became a member oftheCPSUin 1943.

Dzhafarov graduated from the department of language and literature of the Moscow Pedagogical Institute in 1937 and fought in the Great Patriotic War (1941-45). Since 1959 he has been the chairman of the department of theater and film at the Institute of Architecture and Art of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR. From 1967 to 1971 he was the secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Azerbaijan SSR. Dzhafarov’s most important works are about the history of aesthetic thought in Azerbaijani theater and dramaturgy.
