Dzhanelidze, Aleksandr Illarionovich
Born Oct. 24 (Nov. 5), 1888, in the village of Nikortsminda, now in the Ambrolauri Raion, Georgian SSR. Soviet geologist and paleontologist. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Georgian SSR (1941). Member of the CPSU since 1942.
Dzhanelidze graduated from the University of Paris in 1910. In 1915 he began working at the University of Kazan. From 1920 to 1923 he was on a scientific assignment abroad. In 1924, Dzhanelidze became a professor at the University of Tbilisi. Between 1925 and 1956 he was director of the Geological Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Georgian SSR. He is chairman of the Georgian Geological Society. His principal works are devoted to the stratigraphy, tectonics, and regional geology of Georgia; the fauna of the Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous; and the problems of orogeny and the history of the geological sciences. A deputy to and a member of the presidium of the first through fourth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the Georgian SSR, Dzhanelidze has been awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and various medals.
