Dzhanibekian, Gurgen Dzhanibekovich

(pseudonym of G. D. Ter-Khachatrian). Born May 6 (18), 1897, in Yerevan. Soviet Armenian actor. People’s Artist of the USSR (1967). Member of the CPSU since 1944.

Dzhanibekian began his stage career in 1918 in Yerevan. He proceeded to work in Armenian theaters in Leninakan and Tbilisi. In 1924 he became an actor at the G. Sundukian Armenian Theater in Yerevan. His acting is notable for its national distinctiveness and an inner dramatic intensity, at times attaining tragic heights. He is also successful in comedy roles. His best roles are Seiran in Shirvanzade’s Namus, Pepel in Gorky’s The Lower Depths, Figaro in Beaumarchais’s The Marriage of Figaro, Othello in Shakespeare’s play, Protasov in L. Tolstoy’s The Living Corpse, Gaev in Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard, Varravin in SukhovoKobylin’s The Case, Baregam Pakhlavuni in Demirchian’s Napoleon Korkotian, Markar in Papaian’s Yes, the World Has Gone Topsy-turvy!, Grigor-aga in Papazian’s The Cliff, and Solomon in A. Miller’s The Price. Dzhanibekian has also acted in films, worked as a director, and written several plays. A recipient of the State Prize of the USSR (1952), he has been awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and several medals.
