Dzhavakheti Highland

a highland area in Transcaucasia (Georgian SSR); part of the South Georgian Highland.

The Dzhavakheti Highland is located south of the Trialeti Range, between the Kura River to the west and the Nizhniaia Kartli plain to the east. It consists of meridional ranges with elevations up to 3,300 m (the Samsari Range in the northwest and the Dzhavakheti in the southeast) and plateaus (the Tsalka, Gomareti, Dmanisi, and Akhalkalaki) with elevations of 1,200-1,700 m. It is composed of andesitic-basaltic and trachytic lavas. The basins hold many lakes of tectonic and volcanic origin (Paravani, Tabutskuri, and others). The area has mountain steppes and subalpine meadows used for grazing.
