Dzhavakhishvili, Aleksandr Nikolaevich
Born Aug. 5 (17), 1875, in Gori; died Jan. 22, 1973, in Tbilisi. Soviet anthropologist and geographer. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Georgian SSR (1944).
Dzhavakhishvili became a professor at the University of Tbilisi in 1920. From 1945 to 1962 he was director of the Vakhushti Institute of Geography of the Academy of Sciences of the Georgian SSR. His principal works are Anthropology of Georgia (vols. 1-2, 1908-14), Geography of Georgia (vol. 1, 1926), and Geomorphological Regions of the Georgian SSR (1947). Dzhavakhishvili was awarded the Order of Lenin, two other orders, and various medals.
