Dzhelepov, Venedict Petrovich

Born Mar. 30 (Apr. 12), 1913, in Moscow. Soviet physicist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1966). Member of the CPSU since 1949.

Dzhelepov graduated from the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute in 1937. From 1941 to 1943 he worked in the Physicotechnical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and from 1943 to 1948, in the Institute of Atomic Energy. Between 1948 and 1956 he was deputy director of the Institute of Nuclear Problems of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Since 1956 he has been director of a laboratory in the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna. Dzhelepov’ s works deal with atomic nuclei and elementary particles. Since 1965 he has been working on applications of nuclear physics to medicine. In the USSR he was the first to develop a proton beam for medical uses. This beam, with an energy as high as 200 MeV, is used in the treatment of oncological diseases. A recipient of the State Prize of the USSR (1961, 1963), Dzhelepov has been awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and various medals.
