Dzhermuk

 

a city (until 1961, a settlement) in the Armenian SSR. Located in the upper reaches of the Arpa River (a tributary of the Araks River) on a plateau bordered on the east by the Zangezur Mountain Range, at an elevation of 2,100 m, 175 km southeast of Yerevan, with which it is linked by bus and air. Population, 4,000 (1970). There is a mineral water bottling plant and a hydroelectric power plant. A dam is being constructed (1971) on the Arpa River near Dzhermuk.

Dzhermuk is a balneological and climatic high-mountain health resort. Summers are moderately warm (average August temperature, 16°C) and winters are moderately mild (average January temperature, -8°C). Annual precipitation totals approximately 600 mm. Therapeutic remedies include mineral water of the following compositions:

In composition it resembles the water of the health resorts Zheleznovodsk and Karlovy- Vary, and it is drunk, bottled, and used for baths. There is also silt mud. Patients suffering from diseases of the digestive organs, urinary tracts, and locomotor organs; gynecological problems; disorders of the nervous system; and metabolic disorders are treated. Dzhermuk has sanatoriums, facilities for water and mud-bath treatments, vacation hotels, and pump rooms where water for drinking is dispensed. The city also has a branch of the Scientific Research Institute for the Study of Health Resorts and Physiotherapy.
