Dzhivelegov, Aleksei

Born Mar. 14 (26), 1875, in Rostov-on-Don; died Dec. 14, 1952, in Moscow. Soviet literary and theater scholar. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR.

In 1897, Dzhivelegov graduated from the department of history and philology of Moscow University. His main works are on the art and literature of the Renaissance. They include the monograph The Beginning of the Italian Renaissance (1908), Essays on the Italian Renaissance (1929), Dante Alighieri (1933; 2nd revised edition, 1946), and articles on Chaucer, C. Marlowe, Shakespeare, P. Sidney, and Rabelais. Analyzing the phenomena of literature and theater against a broad historical background, Dzhivelegov recreated in his books a portrait of the artists and their times with the true mastery of the writer-historian. Dzhivelegov is a coauthor of the book The History of Western European Theater From Its Beginnings to 1789 (with G. N. Boiadzhiev, 1941); he also wrote Italian Folk Comedy (published in 1954).
