Dzhumakhmatov, Asankhan Dzhumakhmatovich

(also A. D. Dzhumakmatov). Born June 16, 1923, in Arashan, Kirghiz SSR. Soviet conductor. People’s Artist of the USSR (1976). Member of the CPSU since 1944.

In 1958, Dzhumakhmatov graduated from the Moscow Conservatory, where he had studied conducting with L. M. Ginzburg and B. E. Khaikin. In 1948 he became a conductor at the Kirghiz Theater of Opera and Ballet; he held the post of principal conductor at the theater from 1958 to 1966 and assumed the post again in 1973. In 1962 he took on the additional position of principal conductor of the Folk Instrument Orchestra of the Kirghiz SSR.

Dzhumakhmatov has taken part in the staging of such operas as Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades (1950), Vlasov, Maldy-baev, and Fere’s Toktogul (1958), Knipper’s Murat (1959), Mussorgsky’s Boris Codunov (I960), Verdi’s Aída (1960), and Raukhverger’s Dzhamilia (1961).

Dzhumakhmatov received the Toktogul State Prize of the Kirghiz SSR in 1972 and has been awarded three orders and various medals.
