Calbe
(also, Kalbe), a city in the German Democratic Republic, near Magdeburg, on the Saale River. Population, 16, 300 (1970). The city is a river port and a railroad junction. In the early 1950’s the “West” metallurgical enterprises were constructed (using the iron ore from the deposits in Harbke and the lignite coke produced in the city of Lauchhammer). Calbe is the site of a steam power plant and a cement factory. Brown coal is mined nearby.
