Calbuco

Calbuco,

active volcano, 6,570 ft (2,003 m), Llanquihue prov., S central Chile, in the Andes on SE shore of Lake Llanquihue, 20 mi (32 km) NE of Puerto Montt. An explosive stratovolcano, Calbuco underwent edifice collapse in the late Pleistocene, which produced an avalanche of volcanic debris that reached the lake. It was the site of violent eruptions in 1893–94 that sent ash clouds as far as San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina, some 60 mi (100 km) to the east, and of strong explosions in 1917, 1929, 1961, and 1972. Calbuco most recently erupted in 2015.
