gastrointestinal decontaminationCleansing of the gastrointestinal tract to remove toxic substances, pills taken in overdose, or microorganisms. Activated charcoal or polyethylene glycol solutions (e.g., GoLYTELY) given orally reduce the uptake of many drugs from the gastrointestinal tract.
