Gabelentz, Hans Georg Conon Von Der

 

Born Mar. 16, 1840, in Altenburg; died Dec. 11, 1893, in Berlin. German philologist. Son of Hans Conon von der Gabelentz.

Gabelentz was a professor at the universities of Leipzig and Berlin. He studied East Asian languages and general philology. Gabelentz’ major works were A Grammar of the Chinese Language (1881), Confucius and His Teachings(1888), and Philology: Its Problems, Methods, and the Results Attained (1891; 2nd ed., 1901).
