Arkhangelskii, Aleksandr
Arkhangel’skii, Aleksandr Andreevich
Born Oct. 11(23), 1846, in Penza; died Nov. 16, 1924, in Prague. Russian choral director and composer. Honored Artist of the Republic (1921).
In 1880, Arkhangel’skii organized a mixed choir in St. Petersburg. It had an extensive repertoire (including arrangements of folk songs, choral classics, and works of contemporary composers) and was of a high musical quality. This choir made concert tours through the cities of Russia and performed abroad. Arkhangel’skii published the choral collection A Repertoire of Concerts and wrote choral works and arrangements of folk songs. He was one of the first to introduce the female voice into Russian church singing.
