Arkhipov, Ivan Vasilevich

Born Apr. 18 (May 1), 1907, in Kaluga. Soviet state and party figure. Hero of Socialist Labor (1977). Member of the CPSU since 1928.

The son of a railroad worker, Arkhipov graduated from the Moscow Machine Tool Institute in 1932. In 1921 he became a worker in the central repair yards of the Syzran’-Viaz’ma Railroad. He became a design engineer at a plant in Kovrov in 1932. In 1933, Arkhipov began working at the F. E. Dzerzhinskii Metallurgical Works in Dneprodzerzhinsk; he was a foreman, a senior foreman, a deputy supervisor, and a shop supervisor at the works. He became chief mechanic at the Krivoi Rog Metallurgical Works in 1937.

In 1938, Arkhipov was named first secretary of the Krivoi Rog city committee of the Communist Party (Bolshevik) of the Ukraine. He became a member of the apparatus of the Central Committee of the ACP(B) in 1939. In 1943 he was appointed first deputy people’s commissar of nonferrous metallurgy of the USSR; his title was changed to first deputy minister in 1946. Arkhipov was deputy chairman of the State Committee of Foreign Economic Relations of the Council of Ministers of the USSR in 1958 and served as first deputy chairman of the committee from 1959 to 1974. He became deputy chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR in 1974 and first deputy chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR in 1980.

Arkhipov was elected a member of the Central Committee of the CPSU in 1976. He was a deputy to the ninth and tenth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR.

Arkhipov has been awarded four Orders of Lenin, the Order of the October Revolution, two other orders, and various medals.
