Arkhyz Gorodishche
an archaeological monument of the tenth through 12th centuries; the remains of a large Alani city in the Northern Caucasus, situated near the village of Nizhnii Arkhyz in Karachai-Cherkess Autonomous Oblast.
The ruins of the city’s stone walls and buildings and of three Christian temples have been preserved. Roads and squares are being excavated. The digs of 1960–63 uncovered dwellings and productive buildings, remains of Christian churches, and chapels with graves containing objects of the tenth through 12th centuries.
