Gordis, Robert

(1908–92) rabbi, scholar; born in New York City. He graduated from the City College of New York and earned a Ph.D. from Dropsie College (Philadelphia) in 1929. He was rabbi of Temple Beth-El, Rockaway Park, N.Y. (1931–68) and professor of religion at Temple University, Columbia University, and the Jewish Theological Seminary. His many publications include Conservative Judaism—An American Philosophy (1945) and Judaic Ethics for a Lawless World (1986).
