Franz Kranewitter
Kranewitter, Franz
Born Dec. 18, 1860, in Nassereith, Tirol; died there Jan. 4, 1938. Austrian writer.
Kranewitter’s drama For the Sake of the House and Homestead (1893; staged 1895) depicted the bitter struggle arising from division of an inheritance. The historical tragedy Michael Gaismair (1899) is devoted to the uprising of the Tirolean peasants in 1525–26. The central character of the historical tragedy Andreas Hofer (staged 1902; published 1904) is a popular Tiro-lean hero who incited the peasants against Napoleon. Kranewitter’s comedies provide a colorful depiction of local mores. His series of one-act plays The Seven Deadly Sins (1905–25) shows that the historically conditioned defects of peasant psychology are common to all mankind.
