Pharmacology
An extensive list compiled by the FDA of compounds often used in foods, cosmetics and drugs that are widely regarded as having little or no adverse effects on humans. GRAS was legally defined under the 1958 Amendment of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act; GRAS compounds include food preservatives, coatings and films, which may be used on fruits and vegetables; special dietary and nutritive additives; anticaking agents (e.g., sodium ferrocyanide); flavouring agents; gum bases; and other multipurpose agents.
