Gagarinskii, Iurii Vladimirovich
Born Feb. 16 (Mar. 1), 1915, in the village of Petrovka, now Gadiach Raion, Poltava Oblast. Soviet inorganic chemist; corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1970). Member of the CPSU since 1942. Graduated from Moscow University in 1937.
Gagarinskii’s main research deals with the thermodynamic properties of halides, oxides, and other compounds of uranium and with the crystalline structures of inorganic compounds and chemical bonds in them, particularly in raremetal fluoride crystals. His main works are Uranium Tetrafluoride (with L. A. Khripin) and Chemical Shifts of Nuclear Magnetic Resonances in Ionic Fluorides (1970; with S. P. Gabudo). He has been awarded two orders as well as medals.
