FTTA

Fixed-Term Training Appointment. A UK training appointment designed for doctors who want to acquire specific experience or achieve a particular qualification. All FTTAs must be agreed upon by the relevant postgraduate dean. While FTTAs may contribute cover for vacancies in specialist-registrar (SpR) training programmes, they are designed to provide independent SpR training which, while not leading to a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), stands in its own right.
Doctors eligible for an FTTA:
• Overseas doctors without indefinite residence (leave to remain) or settled status in the UK who wish to undertake a Type-II programme, which has training goals agreed upon by the postgraduate dean and related to the individual needs of the doctor, but which do not lead to the award of a CCST.
• Non-UK national doctors with EEA rights of residence who wish to pursue part of their higher-specialist training (Type I equivalent) programme in the UK, on advisement from the relevant authority or institution in the country where they are undertaking most of their training. They are not eligible for a UK CCST.
• Exceptionally, where there is an identified service need, doctors who hold a UK CCST and who benefit from European Community rights or have a right of indefinite residence or settled status in the UK and who wish to pursue a sub-specialty training programme within the grade. Such doctors will be the exception, as most sub-specialty training will be undertaken before the award of a CCST.
