Location:In Washington and Frederick counties, 1 mile west of Burkittsville, off MD 17.

Special Features:Park was once the mountain home of George Alfred Townsend, a Civil Warjournalist and reporter. Site includes a unique collection of buildingsand structures Townsend designed and constructed, some of which havebeen restored. Attractions include a large stone monument dedicated towar correspondents and a visitor center containing some of Townsend'swritings and papers. The Appalachian National Scenic Trail passesthrough the park (see entry in national trails section). Park is alsothe site of the first major battle of the Civil War fought in Maryland.
