global orbiting navigation satellite system (GLONASS)

A navigation satellite system developed by the Russian military that provides a high degree of navigation accuracy sufficient for en route and non-precision applications. The operational space segment of GLONASS consists of twenty-one satellites in three orbital planes, with three on-orbit spares. The ground control segment of GLONASS is located entirely within former Soviet Union territory. See global navigation satellite systems.
