an urban-type settlement and administrative center of Gissar Raion, Tadzhik SSR. Located at the intersection of the Khanaka River (tributary of the Kafirnigan) and the Bol’shoi Gissar Canal. It has a railroad station (Khanaka) 26 km southwest of Dushanbe. Population, 10,000 (1970). A plant producing waterproofing materials and a flour mill are located there. A leather factory was under construction in 1971. Gissar is the site of a pedagogical institute and a folk theater.
