Barton, Donald C. (Clinton)

(1889–1939) geologist; born in Stow, Mass. He taught at Washington University (1914–16), then served as a research geologist in several U.S. oil companies (1916–39). His innovative use of the torsion balance to discover the salt domes that overlie oil deposits, revolutionized the field of petrogeology.
