[′jen·rəl ¦pər·pəs ′laŋ·gwij] (computer science) A computer programming language whose use is not restricted to a particular type of computer or a specialized application.

general-purpose language

A programming language that is used to solve a wide variety of problems. Languages such as C, C++ and Java are examples. Contrast with special-purpose language. See general purpose.
