Fred L. Whipple Observatory

The observatory of the Smithsonian Institution, located at 2600 meters on Mount Hopkins, Arizona. Formerly the Mount Hopkins Observatory, it was renamed in 1982 to commemorate the 20th-century US astronomer Fred Lawrence Whipple, who had been a teacher at Harvard. The chief instrument is the 4.5-meter Multiple Mirror Telescope, which was converted to a 6.5-meter single-mirror instrument and re-entered service for regular observation in early 2001. The other telescopes are a 1.5-meter reflector, and a 10-meter optical mosaic used for gamma-ray astronomy.
