Aperature, opening; aperature appears to be waning in use and is being replaced by opening, which is already preferred for bony structures—e.g., acoustic apparatus, pelvis and thorax; in the clinical anatomy of the latter regions, the more colloquial terms inlet (for superior pelvic opening or superior thoracic opening) and outlet (for inferior pelvic opening or inferior thoracic opening) are widely used.
