Gaius Duilius


Duilius, Gaius

 

Years of birth and death unknown. Roman military and political leader. As consul during the First Punic War (260 B.C.), he defeated the Carthaginians at the naval battle of Mylae, for which he was given a ceremony of triumph; the victory itself was marked by the erection of a rostral column at the Forum in Rome, decorated with the bows of the ships captured at Mylae. He was censor in 258 B.C.
