Freedman, Daniel X.

(1921–93) psychiatrist, educator; born in Lafayette, Ind. Pioneering in the study of drugs and behavior, he researched the brain mechanisms in allergy at the University of California: Los Angeles (1983) and discovered the link of hallucinogens to brain transmitters. With colleagues, he found similar effects of environmental stress and identified hyperserotonemia in autism. He also did research on indole metabolism and brain receptors for hallucinogens.
