defective response of target tissues to glucocorticoids; a common acquired state frequently associated with allergic or autoimmune conditions (for example, asthma or rheumatoid arthritis) or severe inflammatory states (for example, respiratory distress syndrome or septic shock); also occurs as a rare genetic syndrome resulting from malfunction of glucocorticoid receptor.

1. A rare genetically inherited insensitivity of peripheral tissues to the effects of steroid hormones produced by the adrenal cortex. Affected patients produce excessive compensatory quantities of ACTH and may be affected by hyperandrogenism or mineralocorticoid excess. 2.
