Gesualdo di Venosa, Carlo

Born circa 1560 in Naples; died 1613 or 1614 (according to some sources 1615), in Naples. Prince of Venosa. Italian composer.

The work of Gesualdo, who was a pupil of P. Nenna, is representative of Late Renaissance music. A great master of the madrigal, he created a new type characterized by frequent use of chromaticism, bold juxtapositioning of harmonies, contrasts in registers, and rhythmic freedom. Among Gesualdo’s works that have been preserved are six books of madrigals for five voices (published 1594-1611) and one book of madrigals for six voices (1626).
