Galanos, James

(gəlän`ōs), 1925–2016, American fashion designer, b. Philadelphia, settled in California 1945. His luxurious, expensive clothing, created with the most exacting workmanship, was designed for a clientele of wealthy, celebrated, and socially prominent women. His most famous client was Nancy Reagan, wife of former President Ronald Reagan, for whom he designed inaugural gowns of rich fabrics. Galanos was a master of ready-to-wear fashions including his look of full, loose dresses and chiffon coats over simple sheaths, and was also noted for the use of silk fabrics.

Galanos, (James) “Jimmy”

(1924– ) fashion designer; born in Philadelphia. He worked for Paris and New York City designers before opening Galanos Originals, Los Angeles (1951). Often named as America's greatest designer, he specialized in cocktail and evening dresses, famous for their exquisite construction and high prices.
