Gavril Georgiev
Georgiev, Gavril
Born Nov. 8 (20), 1870, in Izmail; died Apr. 20, 1917. An activist in the Bulgarian workers’ and socialist movement; edited with D. Blagoev the first socialist publications.
In 1893, Georgiev became a member of the General Council of the Bulgarian Social Democratic Party, which later became the Bulgarian Workers’ Social Democratic Party (BWSDP). From 1894 to 1896, Georgiev was a member of the Central Committee of the BWSDP and from 1896 to 1897, secretary of the Central Committee of the BWSDP. From 1899 to 1909 he edited the newspaper Rabotnicheski vestnik with G. Kirkov. Georgiev fought against Bulgarian opportunism and defended the principles of Marxism; in 1901 and 1902 he wrote several articles on party organization in which he argued for the necessity of creating effective party organizations. From 1903 to 1909 he was a member of the Central Committee of the BWSDP (Narrow Socialists). In the last few years of his life illness forced him to abandon political activity.
