Galba, Servius Sulpicius

Galba, Servius Sulpicius

Born circa 3 B.C.; died 69 A.D. Roman emperor (ruled 68-69 A.D.). When he was governor of the provinces of Tarragonian Spain, he and Gaius Julius Vindex led a rebellion of troops against Nero in 68. After Nero’s death, Galba was proclaimed emperor by the legions of Tarragonian Spain and confirmed by the senate. After he came to power he quickly came into disfavor with the troops and praetorians because he instituted strict discipline in the army and refused to distribute promised gifts. He was killed in a troop uprising.
