Berezniki

(bĭryĕznyĭkē`), city (1989 pop. 201,000), E European Russia, a port on the Kama River. Situated in an area rich in potassium salts, Berezniki is one of the main industrial centers of the Urals and contains a huge chemical combine. The city was founded as a sodium plant in 1883.

Berezniki is situated near very rich deposits of sodium chloride, potassium, and magnesium salts. It is a large center of the chemical industries of the USSR. The main industries are a nitric fertilizer plant (started in 1932), potassium and titanium-magnesium chemical combines, and a soda factory. In the city, nitric and magnesium fertilizers, synthetic ammonium hydrate, nitric and sulfuric acids, soda, dyes, and many other items are produced. Enterprises for building materials, food, and light industry have been begun. The general technical department of the Perm’ Polytechnical Institute is in Berezniki, as well as chemical-mechanical and construction schools and medical and musical schools. There is also a dramatic theater and a museum of local lore, history, and economy. In the 16th century there existed on the site of the city a village in which Russian industrialists ran saltworks, which yielded “Permianka” salt. Here, in 1883 a soda factory was built (one of the first in Russia). The city was organized in 1932.
